Loved the gig last night at the Rubin. Also the cd I bought. I have another with Mulgrew. I am a piano nut and love Ted R and was curious as to the format. You are great and Nicki was super and much prettier than the average Bass player.
Have a great trip to England.

Hey Randy - Just happened on this website. I played drums with you at I.U. in the early David Baker years (circa 66-67) along with Michael Brecker. Seems that we also were in a big band off-campus led by Greg Imboden (sp). You had a big sound even back then.

Anyway, a blast from the past running across your name after all these years.

It was a real pleasure playing with you at the Pecos Valley Jazz Festival. I know that you were much appreciated by those attending the event. I was impressed by not only your musicianship but by your willingness to play with the "local" musicians. I hope to play drums for you again some day...

Your contributions to this year's Bix Festival were wonderful. Great talent, great shows, great seminars. Although we are too young to have been around for Eddie Condon's Town Hall concerts, we have heard recordings of them on the radio. What we saw at the Capital Theatre on Sunday night had to be as close to that as we will ever experience. Thank you so much.

Your contributions to the Bix Festival this year were immeasurable. That was an incredible group of talented people that landed in Davenport last week. We are too young to have been around for any of Eddie Condon's Town Hall concerts, yet we have a feeling what we experienced at the Afterglow on Sunday night at the Capital Theatre is as close to it as we will ever experience. What a magical night. Your commitment to the Bix Society is something to be welcomed by jazz fans everywhere. Continued success.

Attended Bix seminars, afterglow and concerts throughout weekend. Best time we have had in YEARS!!! We live in Davenport so the concerts are always a must go, but this year, the seminars made it a "living" experience. One big moment was Mr. Sudhalter signing my mother's copy of "Bix - Man & Legend". She would be 103 years, if she had lived, and Bix and Paul Whiteman were her era. She shared great stories about the dances at the "Col". We have been married 52 years and remember dancing at the "Col" with Louis Armsrong and the Dorseys. Paul Whiteman was always at the "Masonic Temple" (local concert hall) and can still image Kate Smith and "God Bless America". I was touched by your comments about visiting the Biederbeck house on 7th Street - I grew up just south on 6th street - and the house on Grand is near my grandmother's house where she moved from the farm. First "Pres" is a gem - their music director is truly a blessing to this community. Oakdale is the "home" of many Roth family members and we pass by the Beiderbecke site when visting. Thank you for coming and joining our community. We are members of the Putnam and are excited about a Bix Archivve. We look forward to more visits from you. Best wishes, Don & Mary Ann Roth

Hi Randy,
Ran into some great musicians in New Orleans who knew you, and remembered sitting in with you, on one of your trips there. They were part of the Amy Sharpe trio (a jazz banjoist, and alias "A Sharp") who's a friend of my sister Steph's --

Last mardi grad it was hard being in NoLa but their trio cheered everyone up--
Fond memories of Bennington, and listening to music. I treasure your first album with the tune Hyde Park. -- Hoping you are doing well!
Best,
Chicha

I remember the first time we met at I.U. (Can it be almost forty years ago?) and I said to myself, wow, here's a fantastic trumpet player who one day will have a great website. Well, maybe not. I got to your site from Jay Leonhart's. Connections are everything as they say. See you on the 14th.

I am a trumpet player , and have followed Randy's work on Concord, Nagel-Heyer, and other labels, as well as hearing him live on several occasions. For me , he is the most astoundingly creative and consistent jazz trumpeter alive, as well as being a great source of inspiration for my own playing. He literally has it all -- great range, sound, attack, and displays
a limitless imagination in his solo work. Simply put, an exceedingly
tasteful and inspired player. If I had to pick a good place to start
listening to his many excellent recordings, it would be "Cliffhanger"(Nagel-Heyer), in my humble opinion one of the finest sets of pure jazz trumpet playing recorded over the past 50 years. It
is an absolute gem, and for me represents the pinnacle of Randy's
art.

Mr. Randy Sandke: Howzzit --- Thanx so much for your generous & timely gift of CD's to KRFC FT COLLINS. (I'll send my Station blurp in a follow up e-mail). I was delightfully surprised by ALL the sounds of surprise that I've heard in your releases. I'd no idea of your experimental & modern work. "The Mystic Trumpeter" sounded (in addition to it sounding like yourself) quite Dolphyesque & Russellesque --- wonderful. AND I sequeyed "The Walks Of Paradise" with Fred Hersch's "Leaves Of Grass --- 'The Sleepers'". I might be one of the few Jazz broacasters to fit two back-to-back plays featuring Whitman & Jazz. Thanx. I also broadcasted your rendition of Mr. Strayhorn's "Star-Crossed Lovers" --- very fitting for an overnight Jazz show. I'm working my way through "Outside In" --- what a combo you've got going there. I dig the music & your clever, funny, good-humored, & informative liner notes. Yeah, yeah, yeah liner notes live! Uri Caine (I'm a non- musician) is one of my favs; I've got a number of Winter & Winter recordings & heard him once with Don Byron. So, Mr. Sandke, much obliged for your supporting KRFC, and privileged & pleasured to air your music. UTNG (Until The Next Gig), dig, Peter Poses, Host of "OverNight Jazz: The Soundz Of Surprize".
